Taekwondo Belts

Taekwondo ranks are divided into three levels of junior (kup), senior (dan) and instructor rankings.

Junior Level
Junior levels begin with the white belt, and work through the ten coloured rankings (kup) to reach the highest level of achievement, the black belt.

Belt colours and their meanings:

  1. White Belt (10th Kup) - Signifies innocence and lack of knowledge within Taekwondo
  2. White Belt with Yellow Stripe (9th Kup)
  3. Yellow Belt (8th Kup) - Represents the seed taking root in the earth, as Taekwondo takes root in its student
  4. Yellow Belt with Green Stripe (7th Kup)
  5. Green Belt (6th Kup) - Signifies the growing plant and the student's growing Taekwondo skills
  6. Green Belt with Blue Stripe (5th Kup)
  7. Blue Belt (4th Kup) - Represents the skies, the direction in which the plant is growing
  8. Blue Belt with Red Stripe (3rd Kup)
  9. Red Belt (2nd Kup) - Red signifies danger, warning the student and those around him of his abilities
  10. Red Belt with Black Stripe (1st Kup)

Senior and Instructor Levels
The black belt is the first of 9 dan grades. Dan levels are signified by stripes or by roman numerals. This is not obligatory, however, and some clubs chose to use plain black belts.

In Taekwondo, dan grade belts are always black, and grades are much more difficult to achieve. Each grade is grouped into levels of responsibility:

  1. Novice (1st - 3rd Dan) - Assistant Instructor or Boo-Sabum
  2. Expert (4th - 6th Dan) - Instructor or Sabum
  3. Master (7th- 8th Dan) - Master or Sahyun
  4. Grand Master (9th Dan) - Grand Master or Saseong
