A karate gi is somewhat similar to a judogi, however the material and cut of the uniform is generally much lighter and looser fitting. Karate training has a strong emphasis on striking and kicking, with a limited range of standing throws compared to Judo, and so over the years it has evolved to maximize mobility and speed without the extremely coarse and strong fabric required for grappling and throwing.
Cheaper karate gi are cut from very light fabrics, generally no more than 8oz in weight. They maintain the benefit of low prices but are easily ripped, and will stick to the skin once you start perspiring which can cause discomfort.
Better karate gi are cut from a light canvas style cloth which will stand up to a considerable amount of abuse without restricting mobility. These karate gi use at least a 10 oz cotton canvas, and can stand up to more rigorous applications.
Advanced practitioners tend to go for a much heavier cotton canvas of 12 or 14 oz, sometimes as heavy as 16 oz. Heavier fabrics are far more durable and will absorb perspiration. To get the most comfortable feel, look out for brushed cotton canvas karate gi, as the extra comfort makes a big difference when wearing heavier fabrics.
If you’re not sure of your exact size, it’s worth asking your instructor as they will most likely be able to tell you at a glance!
